Worst historical romance I've ever read. This book was about a woman having sex with her future son-in-law. That's about it. I don't usually mind sex, but this was over kill. And not because it was explicit, but because every single sex scene was ridiculous and completely terrible. Some were even laughable. The moments they were intimate were not sweet, seductive, or anything else. They were just there. They made no sense to the plot of the story. Also, half of them didn't even make sense... They were very poorly written sex scenes and they got so old. They seemed to drag on forever and did not move the story along at all. The story was secondary to the horrible sex.The story was incredibly weak and the characters were ridiculous. Nothing was actually explained. For example: In the beginning of the book, Vaughn goes to his father's house to secure Kirkaldy. But by the end you don't know why he had to secure it from his father or how he did it. It was randomly announced at the end that Vaughn did not need his father's title because he had Kirkaldy. No explanation. And that's one of many plot holes. And Elisa? She was a moron. She believed everything any man told her. Not once did she question why it was taking so long to find her son. And why did she think Rufus was the only one that could find him? She didn't even ask Vaughn.
The way the book ended was comical. I laughed pretty hard and I think it was supposed to be a serious and triumphant moment! It wasn't. The slow applause was completely ridiculous.
The story was full of plot holes and the sex scenes really held the story back. If you want a book to read with a horrible story line and lots of pointless sex that doesn't help the story progress, this is the book for you. If you like your books to actually have a good story with good characters that aren't completely secondary to atricious sex scenes, pass on this one.

REALLY!!!! The summary was intriguing torn between an engagement (with a old powerful boor) that will provide the power to recover her "lost" son and her finances attractive desirable son. BUT the almost immediate foolish jealousy and selfish attraction that makes her do STUPID things - that jeopardize her son and has nothing to do with realistic reasons to betray your only child - obviously written with no desire to be human - just filled with sexual desire out of no apparent foundation
This could have been so much better. I hate it when the author has the hero at death's door and he awakens with the strength to go at it like rabbits. I did find the female irritating.. There were a lot of holes in the story line. Son was missing for years she's socially unacceptable and 7 years later the only hope she has of finding him is the bad guy.. The bad guy who is our hero's father but not his father after all. Best thing I can say about this book... I didn't pay a lot for it... In a nutshell this a story of an older woman having lots of sex with a younger man.
Because I would have been really annoyed at myself if I had paid for this story.
The h is an irrational, thoughtless idiot. We're told her main motive in life is to get her son back, but it's probably best she never gets custody of that child. What a horrible parent she would make, always acting on impulse and repeatedly doing things she assesses--no more than 10 minutes earlier--are really, really bad decisions.
The straw that broke the camel's back for me was that through one (of MANY) such irrational, impulsive moments, the h's recklessness causes the death of an animal. And yet neither she nor anyone else even bats an eye that an innocent animal had to die because of her stupidity. They move immediately from that incident to "oh well, that's done, let's go back to getting busy".
No, no, no, no, no.
Aside from this thoroughly unsympathetic and unlikeable h, the plot was hackneyed and never deviated from the well-trod path of romance tropes with which historical readers are all too familiar. I gave one star for the typo-free spelling and good use of grammar
Awful! I quit reading when Vaughn explains that he's 24, graduated from school 10 years ago (which would've made him 14) & had in school for 12 years (which would've made him 2)! Ridiculous. All this within the first few pages. Really? Then he says he's been thrown out "almost 20 years". Does she not own a calculator? If he was 2, which is in and of itself outrageous, it would've been 22 years since he set foot in his home. Then at a dinner table, Elisa talks about her corset! No, just no. I finally drudged my way to the end & no kidding she had included a slow clap! I'm glad this was free, I'm pissed I wasted my time.
